The Rabbit

Posted on September 17, 2025 by Verl

Many years ago, 1962 perhaps I was driving from Heber City Utah to Provo Utah which was around 28 miles. I attended vocational school days but two nights a week I attended a special class for broadcasting radio. I had to drive home late on those nights. On the way home from Provo the road was snow packed. For those in South America that know not what that is when it snowed the cars would drive over the snow and pack it down and it became very slick. As I was driving I had to pass through a cut in the road that left both banks very high on both sides. After pulling up the hill I got to the top and a cotton tail rabbit was in the roadway. Whatever caused me to do it I will not know but I stopped the truck and got out and chassed the rabbit and caught it. I got back into the truck and placed the rabbit under my coat and against my side.

As I continued down the road I felt something crawling on my side. Then it came to me that there was more than one crawling on my side. Little slow but finally catching on the rabbit had fleas and they were crawling up my side. I unrolled the window and tossed the rabbit back into the snow. The next morning while having breakfast I told my dad about the rabbit. He looked at me and said You know it takes two grey hounds to catch one rabbit what made you think you could do that? Now my next question is when you caught it did you not notice it was not able to run?

Now he said is time to make you understand a principle that has been used by many for years and years and it would be good for you to remember this lesson. When something is obviously not right there is a reason. The rabbit could not run or you would have not caught it remember that rabbit when you go out at night.

It was not two months later I entered the other end bar in Heber at closing time just in time to have a beer before they closed. As I sat down the bar maid looked at me and said Verl would you like to join me later at my house for a good roll in the bed. The rabbit came to mind and I said no I don’t think I will and she went to the back to get more beer to fill the coolers for the next day. Baby Huey was setting beside me and said I wish she would offer me. I said I am not Clark Gable she just wants some sex I said say something if you want it. He did and they made a date.

The next Saturday night I walked into the bar and Baby Huey, who was the size of a grizzly bear stood up and took a swing at me. Growing up fighting in the ring his swing was so slow I ducked under it and as he went by I hooked his coat and continued throwing him into the door. The bar was noisy but he hit so hard all noise stopped. What is wrong with you I said I thought we were friends. He said I thought so to but you let me take her home knowing she had a venereal disease and never said a word. Sit down here a minute and let me buy you a beer and tell you the story of a rabbit. She offered and you figured what? I truly had no knowledge of her habits and had not even thought about it I said but why was she so free? That rabbit has saved me hundreds of dollars and many nights out of jail. It has been with me for many years but it is well worth knowing.
