Rusty and the Wildest Christmas in Town

Posted on December 5, 2025 by Verl

Christmas story should please the soul at this time of year. How about we have a natural in lifeโ€™s journey. Lets have a little boy and a dog is there anything better to wish on us than that of natural destruction and lovable blunders.ย ย

At Christmas time we have many things going at the same time. Planning, doing and trying to forget. Makes one happy just to read a small story just because I want to write it and you need to read something light and happy.ย ย

As our small boy settles down at the edge of the pond he watches others. Not a big pond just a few eyeballs wide and twice that long. Rusty come here. Good boy glad you know your name it helps when you come to me. Walking up Big John looks down and says well Merry Christmas Tommy. I see Rusty is still teaching you how to behave.ย ย

Yes Big John just this morning she got into Mrs. Smiths purse and he came out with something that had Mrs. Smith running around chasing Rusty down the hallway through the kitchen into the garage and around all the stuff pilled up waiting for you to put away. What do you think Rusty had found that had Mr. Smith so excited and willing to run. At her age she must have been a sight to see. How old is she? She must be at least 30 John. I would bet a little older but that has got to be close. But what did he have? Was it big? How big was it Billy? What did she say? Did she say anything? Yes John she said you little and I would not repeat what she called Rusty she really forgot his name she got so mad and excited she said when she caught him she was going to cut off his tail. Do you really think she would do that Big John? Oh, I doubt that she was just mad and wanted back whatever he had and I would really like to know what that was.ย

You know John this is Christmas and everyone has a little something hid away they donโ€™t want outers to see. Why I remember when I was a kid we hid things everywhere possible. Every time I give you a chance to dream John you jump on it like a hawk on a snake. You have more stories about your childhood than if you were a child for fifty years. Yes, Billy I told my dad that if I were to move out of his house I should have something to hold me over and social security would do.ย

Back on track Billy do you have any idea what it was Rusty had she wanted so badly. But it was powerful strong to pull her like that John. Say as she ran down the street she crossed the street down at the corner by Stewโ€™s Automotive. Letโ€™s go talk with Stew and see if he got an eyeball on what it was. Merry Christmas Stew. Yes, same to both of you. What brings you to my little shop at Christmas. Were you bringing gifts? You can stack them over there if you are if not then set down and have an apple cyder with me. Is the cyder fermented Stew? Hey I can market that Stew. Howโ€™s that? Big sign โ€œCyder Fermented Stew.โ€ย ย Itโ€™s a natural people come to get stewed. To some, that is a bowl of stew to others that is a fermented cyder to drink. Donโ€™t ask him about laid it would ruin Christmas John.ย ย

Stew the reason we are here is to ask you if you had gotten a look at what Rusty had said that Mrs. Smith was running after him so. Stew broke out in laughter and got to giggling and laughing till we could not get a word from him.ย ย After ten minutes John finally got Stew to say that yes he knew exactly what it was and again started the laughter and this time in went on much longer. What could that dog possibly take that could be carried in a purse and cause such laughter he said aloud to just here his voice is what I thought.ย ย

Billy Big John asks where else did this dog run to? Well after he crossed the street at Stewโ€™s then he we passed Naylors and past Randel’s Rags and riches then he crossed the street again and came right back here Billy. So, he passed a lot of stores that you didnโ€™t mention. Oh,ย ย

he went right down that street like a fox on a hunt. He didnโ€™t even stop to sniff or anything he just stuck his nose in the air and dragging that bag he just keep on running. Well, we have to go check all of them and then maybe we will know.ย ย

Now just a moment why do you want to know what was in Mr. Smithโ€™s purse that would make her chase a dog to get it. Why do we want to know what is to Mrs. Smith so personable that she chased the dog to get it. If itโ€™s that personal I do not want to know and if you think about it you will agree with me.ย ย

All that is true and I agree but I still want to know what Billy said and John agreed with him. Billy said that he knew Rusty and if he went into a purse as I know he did there was only a few things that would cause that. Itโ€™s only natural she had to have something eatable with a smell so Rust smelled it. Yes now we are getting somewhere. Is there anything else that would cause Rusty to do that Billy? Yes but they canโ€™t put that in a hand purse. What do you mean Billy?ย Looking up, Bill smiled and said, “I’m eleven. How old are you?”ย

So now we either go on down the street or turn around and go home and for get this whole thing. Common Big Jim we will continue and with that Stew stood up and said a real stew has lots of ingredients so I think I will join you so they went over to Bobs and ask him if he had saw Rusty run past with Mrs. Smith following trying to catch it. With that Bob bends over in laughter and stars to the hawed and carrying on like a pack of rats found a few meal. His laughter brought the roof down he had a very deep and profound laughter. Even John started to laugh and pretty soon all were slapping each other and pounding another backs it got so the hole place was in laugher and it took a good five minutes to get them to calm down. Bob this is getting ridiculous we ask Stew and got the same response and with that Bob went into another of those breathtaking moments I thought he had lost his mental thoughts. Well tell me what you saw that day. Bob could hardly stop laughing long enough to tell us he would ruin Mrs. Smith Christmas if he were to tell he refused to say anymore.ย ย

ย

This has turned into a real drag Stew I just started a simple question and now have half the town trying to find why a dog got into a purse. One more place then I will consider to Mrs. Smith secreciesโ€™. Ok whoโ€™s shop or store is next letโ€™s try Turners that should turn the tell. Walking up to Steve Turner Big John says Merry Christmas Steve yes the same to you Big John what are you doing running for reelection half the town following you. No, we have a very simple question Steve did you see Rusty run by here with Mrs. Smith chasing it? As before Steve broke into laughter and was laughing so he could not keep in his chair.ย ย

When he finally got calmed down John says we have stopped at Stews, Bobs, and now Steveโ€™s, and we still donโ€™t know what the secrete was that was in Mrs. Smiths purse that caused Rusty to do that he was never a dog that got into trouble. Well folks I am going to make the day for you. I know what was in that purse that everyone wants to know about. Ya Smart Alec.ย

What was it? He couldnโ€™t help it he had to laugh a little before he could admit to a small slice of steak with a handwritten invite to the town Christmas Party tonight and she knew that the only way to get everyoneโ€™s attention is to get the interest up and feed them curiosity. You do know that Mrs. Smith is the Mayor and the rest you have ask are all counsel men so I can assure you that this is a handwritten subpoena to attend our Christmas Party she campaigned on the fact she would double our Christmas Party attendance. And this looks to me like most of the town and no way to avoid it because it is all done legal and like.ย ย
